Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is a hair-loss condition which usually affects the scalp. It typically causes one or more patches of hair loss.

Depending upon the extent of involvement, alopecia areata is divided into:

1. Localized alopecia areata
2. Alopecia totalis: involve the whole scalp, eyebrows, beard
3. Alopecia universal is: Total loss of body hair

In Alopecia areata, the immune system attacks the hair follicles, resulting in the arrest of the hair growth stage. Alopecia areata usually begins with one or more small, round bald patches on the scalp.

Alopecia areata tends to affect younger individuals, both male and female.

Alopecia areata is a hair-loss condition which usually affects the scalp. It typically causes one or more patches of hair loss.

Alopecia areata tends to occur most often in children, teens, and young adults. However, it can also affect older individuals and rarely toddlers. Alopecia areata is not contagious. It should not be confused with the hair shedding that may occur following the discontinuation of hormonal estrogen and progesterone therapies for birth control or the hair shedding associated with the end of pregnancy.

Tips
Tips to Deal with Alopecia Areata
• Do not apply contact irritants from "helpful" friendly advices or home remedy tips! This may cause further worsening of the lesions and sometimes even cause permanent scarring if the irritant reaction is severe.

• If you are getting new patches of hair loss despite treatment, look for hidden infections

• Review whether you are causing undue pressure on the area with tight fitting helmets or scarves, improper shaving techniques etc. Also correct your posture while sleeping or watching TV.

• Use hands free sets or blue tooth for your cell phones. This will reduce the damaging effects of the radio waves emitted by the sets.

• If your stress level is high, learn how to manage the stress. A sense of perceived loss of affection from the near and dear may be the underlying problem in the causation of patchy loss of hair.

Treatment
Treatment at Hairline
When a patient is diagnosed with alopecia, the first question is usually about whether or not the hair will regrow. The answer is usually vague as each case is different. In many cases hair growth occurs spontaneously in a few months without any medical treatment. A wait and watch approach is indeed a non expensive, safer alternative for a limited number of patients. But if the patches are getting wider and the hair pulling test is positive, it is wiser to consult your dermatologist.

Hair pulling test
Try pulling out the hairs at the periphery of the patches. If they come out very easily without any resistance, the test is positive. Also these hairs will look like "exclamation marks" with loss of pigment and thinning just above the hair roots.

A number of treatments are known to aid in hair regrowth. Multiple treatments may be necessary. At Hairline we offer solution to this problem. We give the best suitable treatment for Alopecia Areata through the holistic approach of Allopathy,Homeopathy and Ayurveda and Therapy with internal and external medicines.

Once the hair loss has stopped and new patches stop appearing, you can boost the hair growth with medications

When treatments do not give results, Hairline offers solution
Re-growth of hair occurs in some patients; and in others, the hair loss is permanent; for such cases the treatment at Hairline are Wigs, Toupees and Hair Extensions.

Wigs and Toupee/ Patches
Wigs are a common treatment choice in patients with alopecia areata. Wigs protect the scalp from the sun and keep the head warm and also boost confidence, help build a positive self-image.

A wig can help you feel most like yourself. If you feel slightly apprehensive at the thought of wearing a wig, rest assured that today’s wigs are different than what you would have purchased years ago. The wigs we offer are comfortable, lightweight, flattering styles that are easy to wear and care for.

Hair Extensions
Hair extensions offer great solutions for people who have areas of thinning or damage though over-use of tongs or colouring products.

At Hairline the latest research documented with the National Alopecia Areata Foundation recommends use of certain Prescription medicines along with PUVA therapy, Immunotherapy combined with some topical camouflaging agents.

In extreme cases wigs are suggested. At Hairline we have a whole range of wigs ranging from basic nets to full lace stretch to fish net wigs customised to the scalp of the human head and adorned with human hair offering even the possibility of highlights on a need basis.

Family Support
Family support
It is natural to have concerns about the hair loss and on the way how you look or feel.Effects of alopecia areata are mainly psychological (loss of self image due to hair loss). Living with hair loss can be hard. The thought of Alopecia Areata alone can be a cause for anxiety and depression for most people. Women are especially hard hit because they usually have a higher regard of their hair than most men and going bald because of Alopecia Areata is not an acceptable option for most of them. Sadly to say, there is no way of avoiding Alopecia Areata from happening to you and like many things in life whether good or bad, the only way to survive it is to accept and adapt to it and take treatment.
